What is Whiskey?

Whiskey is a type of fermented alcohol made from fermented grain mash. Varieties (which can be malted), including barley, corn, mustard, and wheat, are used for different varieties. It is generally aged in wood casks, usually made of white oak. 

Whiskey can be made in many sections and types around the world. In specific solidarity characteristics of different classes and types, there is fermentation of grains, distillation, and aging (keeping for a long time) in wooden barrels.

How is Whiskey made?

Mainly whiskey is made in five stages:

Stage 1 – Malting

Stage 2 – Mashing

Stage 3 – Fermentation

Stage 4 – Distillation

Stage 5 – Maturation

 

Stage 1

Malting process converts raw grain into malt (Malt is a sprouted cereal grain, dried in the process known as “Malting”.) which is mainly used for cooking or making whiskey, but it can also be used to remove malt vinegar or malt. Various grains are used for the goods; barley, jowar, wheat, and mustard are the most common. 

Stage 2 

Mashing process is a process of hot water that hydrolizes barley malt which activates enzymes and converts grain starch into fermented sugar.  

Stage 3

Fermentation is a metabolic process that produces chemical changes in organic substance through the action of enzymes that converts sugar into acids, gases, and or alcohol. 

Stage 4

Distillation is the process of separating the components or substances from the liquid mixture using selective boiling and condensation. As a result, complete separation (almost pure whiskey) is obtained.

It is one of the major parts in the process of making whiskey, distillation is the place where alcohol made during fermentation is removed from washing so that the whiskey becomes mature.

The product of the initial distillation is known as a low wine and when it is distilled the second time it is known as high wine, which contains about 70% alcohol.

Stage 5

Maturation process or aging process: Whiskey is mostly aged in wooden barrels, charred white oak which also adds a flavor. During aging water, alcohol, and congeners (things added to remove the smell, or add some taste after distillation) mix with each other over time. Second, is their reaction with oxygen and the third is about the interaction with wood. It’s natural that this solution would absorb flavor from wood over time. Typically it takes 3-5 years for a whiskey to mature and also you can find whiskeys which have been aged in excess of 10 years.

Whiskey, like most other alcoholic beverages, it can cause excessive damage to the body if it is not consumed in smaller amounts. There are health benefits of whiskey when consumed in moderations.

Controls Diabetes:

Whiskey is shown to reduce the likelihood of diabetes, sometimes up to 30-40%. In moderate amounts, also it can improve your body’s ability to control insulin and glucose levels, thereby reducing the chance of developing diabetes. 

Maintains weight:

Drinking whiskey does not affect your body weight as this is one of the crucial benefits of whiskey over a beer.

There is no fat and very little sodium in whiskey. It contains calories and carbohydrates, but in the form of alcohol, and the small quantity in it, it is a simple sugary that is quickly broken to use as energy for the body. 

Stress reduction:

After a tough day, a shot of whiskey helps calm your nerves, thus relaxing your body. Stress and anxiety can cause any physical health problems that may damage your body which can be avoided by whiskey by increasing blood circulation, all the organs also contain oxygenated blood, so that you can control and become calm.

Prevents Heart Disease:

Whiskey can reduce the risk of blood clotting, which reduces the chance of heart attack or stroke. There are also antioxidants found in whiskey, which prevent cholesterol from forming in the artery and promote the health of good cholesterol.

Helps the digestive system:

Whiskey is consumed after meals to help them pass through the digestive system smoothly. It brings fresh blood flow to the stomach and other organs, which helps in relaxing the body and gets digested food. 

Reduces internal blood clotting:

Whiskey is also known as a blood thinner that helps to reduces blood clottings. Internally, if your blood falls on important blood in your blood vessels or arteries it can be disastrous. Atherosclerosis, which is usually caused by the large construction of cholesterol, can combine with blood clots that can result in stroke, heart attack, and death.

To make sure that you are not infected, you can put whiskey on fresh wounds.

Promotes immune system:

The antioxidant in whiskey actually stimulates the immune system, which helps fight the common cold, diseases, and infection. 

Side-effects of Whiskey:

Whiskey is an alcoholic beverage, therefore, despite its health benefits, if it is not taken in restraint, it has a more harmful side effect. Some of these include:

Alcohol poisoning (around 40% of alcohol), causing heart rate, nausea, and vomiting.

Liver cirrhosis is caused by excessive drinking, which wanders the normal body metabolism completely, resulting in a complete disruption of fat coagulation, liver stiffness, and its normal activities.

Excessive alcohol consumption leads to addiction, causing the body to drink more and harm more than to stop which creates other harmful effects.

Due to excess drinking, the body metabolism is completely destroyed, resulting in an increased probability of stroke.

Whiskey and all other alcoholic beverages can interact strongly with some types of drugs, which can cause serious reactions that can seriously affect our health. Those who are taking anticoagulants, medicines for diabetes, beta-blockers, antibiotics, pain relief, or sleeping pills should be avoided.

  • Whiskey name comes from the Gaelic word “uisge beathe” which translates as ‘Water of Life‘.
  • The life of whiskey starts when it is 40 years old to form a fabulous drink and the oldest record of whiskey is about 150 years old which also means it can last forever that is the fact of whiskey that can’t be ignored.
  • Macallan ‘M whiskey is the most expensive in the world which was sold for £393,109.
  • The whiskey stored in the barrel gradually evaporates at an estimated rate of 2% annually. This is also known as “angels” share.
  • Whiskey can be made from any grain including quinoa.
  • Both spellings “whisky” and “whiskey” are correct, “Whisky” is specific to Scotch Whisky, and Whiskey is specific to Irish.
  • Jack Daniels escaped at the age of 6 and learned to make whiskey from Lutheran Minister.
  • The unknown fact of whiskey: In 2000, a wild Turkish whiskey warehouse was set on fire in which 17,000 barrels of flaming whiskey were spreading in the surrounding forest, causing them to fire. In which 20% of the whiskey was flooded in the Kentucky River, which inhibits its oxygen supply, killed 228,000 fish with 66 miles of the river.
