With the constant rise of digital technology, sitting all day for longtime has become the most common issue for people working in the workplace.
Most of the people workes on their desks spending an average of 8-10 hours a day sitting in front of a computer or laptops, which leaves very little time for physical activities throughout the day.
And unfortunately, as we all have been convinced, sitting all day long can actually be extremely harmful to your health-more than smoking, as some experts claim.
Living a sedentary (lazy) lifestyle can be dangerous for your health so the less you sit or lie down in the day, the better your chances of living a healthy life.
If you are standing or roaming during the day, then the risk of early death is less compared to sitting at the desk for a long time.
Here are some of the dangerous side effects of sitting all day long
1. Weight gain
Moving your muscles helps your body digest the fat and sugars you eat. So if you sit for a long time or prolonged time, then digestion is not as efficient, so you keep the fat and sugar stored in your body as fat.
Sitting too much has been shown to reduce lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity, which can have a negative effect on the body’s ability to burn fat.
It increases the fat reserves and encourages the use of carbohydrate (instead of fat) for fuel, and as a result, the body will continue to receive fat even while consuming a low-calorie diet.
Even if you exercise, but spend a large amount of time seating all day long, you are still having a risk of health problems such as metabolic syndrome. The latest research shows that you need 45-60 minutes per day of medium-intensity activity to deal with the risk of excessive severity.
2. Heart problems
Sitting for a long time has been linked to heart diseases and strokes.
When our body burns a little amount of fat and blood circulation is poor, then the growing potential of fatty acids blocks (accumulates) the arteries in the heart.
Some experts say that those who are inactive or sitting for a prolonged period have high chances of suffering from heart attack and strokes.
3. Body pain or bad posture problems
The longer time you sit, the more likely it is that you can experience chronic pain in areas like your neck, shoulders, back, hips, joints, and legs.
If you spend your time hiring on a computer keyboard, it can cause pain and stiffness in your neck and shoulders.
Same as your glutes and hips will not support you as well if you sit for long periods of time. Sitting makes your hips flexor muscles smaller, which can cause problems in your hip joints.
Even sitting for long periods can cause problems in your back, especially if you sit continuously with bad posture. Bad yoga may also cause bad spine health, such as compression in the disk in your spine, leads to premature decay, which can be very painful.
4. Varicose veins or spider veins
Sitting for a very long time and blood can accumulate in your feet which puts extra pressure on your nerves. They can be swelling, twist, or grow which is known as varicose veins.
You can also see bundles of spider veins, broken blood vessels. They are not usually serious, but they can cause pain.
Varicose veins are usually not dangerous. In rare cases, they can lead to blood clots, which can lead to serious problems.
5. Diabetes problems
The risk of diabetes among the physically inactive people is high, it is a major contributing factor for sitting all day long time because of muscular reduction and strength can reduce insulin sensitivity, which means that cells react slowly to insulin.
Studies have shown that due to lying on the bed for five days, insulin resistance can increase in your body (this makes your blood sugar rise).
6. DVT problems
Long-term seating can slow down your blood circulation and cause blood accumulation in the feet and legs, which can cause dangerous blood clots like varicose veins, swollen ankles or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
DVT is a serious problem because if the blood clot is broken and travels in the vein of the foot, it can cut blood flow in other parts of the body including your lungs, which can lead to a medical emergency that can cause major complications or even death.
